Just thought I'd post a link to Wright Thompson's account/article about the disappearance and death of former Garfield High School and WSU Star Tony Harris. While the news of Tony's tragic journey and subsequent passing in Brazil came to light back in mid-November, Thompson actually went to Brazil in an attempt to sort through all the murky and incredibly depressing details surrounding Harris' final days. It's truly one tremendously compelling piece of writing. Whether you knew Tony, followed his hoop career, or knew nothing about his story, I recommend taking the time & engulfing yourself in this piece. Thompson also discusses the background behind the story with Henry Abbott of TrueHoop, and and stress and sadness that came with decribing what transpired.
I didn't know Tony personally, but in playing basketball against him on a handful of occasions, I can say he was one fierce competitor, and a tremendous scorer. As a player while competing, you often make flash evaluations about the guys you play against. Can they shoot? How strong is their opposite hand? What's their first step like? I will say that in guarding Tony, he was strong in each offensive facet of the game, an absolute handful. I had nothing but respect for the way he played the game.
Thoughts and prayers go out to Tony's family and friends, what a tremendous loss.
